Step 2. Score each job profile
Why?
Systematic scoring provides an objective way to compare jobs.
How?
- Use the job profiles created in Tool 2 and focus on one job at a time.
- Working individually, have each committee member read the description of the levels for each subfactor in the factor and subfactor plan.
- Working individually, have each committee member assign a level (0–5) by matching the job profile to the level that best describes the job’s demands, subfactor by subfactor, and make brief notes on the reasoning for their scoring. Repeat for all job roles.
- Convene the committee and discuss together the levels for each job role for each subfactor. Discuss until there is consensus.
- Insert the agreed levels into ‘Tool 5 – Supporting Excel (standard approach)’. It will give you the total score for each job role, based on the inserted levels. Record all decisions for transparency.
Mistakes to avoid
- Scoring based on gender stereotypes (e.g. undervaluing care or communication or assuming these are personal characteristics and not job demands).
- Allowing one person to decide alone – always validate levels as a group.
