Consultation on Mapping Cyber Violence in the EU-27

Cyber violence against women and girls is an evolving new dimension to gender-based violence grounded in the increased use of digital technologies and maximised by the constant connectivity proper of Web 2.0. Too often, however, cyber violence is not considered as ‘real violence’: on the contrary, it is quickly dismissed as an insignificant, ‘virtual’ phenomenon and thus is viewed as less damaging for a woman compared to other forms of violence, such as physical harm.

On 2 December 2021, the European Institute for Gender Equality is organising a virtual consultation and launch of a new pilot project on this topic. During the event, we will be sharing the overview of EU and EU-27 national policies, research and data on various forms of cyber violence against women and girls and we will share some preliminary results of the analysis conducted by EIGE with the support of the Project Contractor, Valdani Vicari & Associati (VVA).

One of the objectives of this project is to develop new definitions of cyber violence against women and girls and its various forms. Therefore, this consultation meeting includes a discussion that will bring together policymakers, experts and statistical officers, as well as EU institution and NGO representatives.
