traditional harmful practices

Additional notes and information
The term is not recommended, because it tends to suggest that such practices originate and persist almost exclusively within non-western cultural traditions. It may also suggest that, in western societies, practices harmful to girls and women are not practised, or even that their existence in western societies is overlooked by international human rights treaty bodies. Thus, the term ‘harmful practices’ is the preferred term.
The concepts and definitions found in this glossary were published in 2016, and some may be out-of-date. EIGE is currently looking into which terms may need to be updated in the future.
