Law n°7 of 9th January 2006 (Dispositions regarding prevention and prohibition of female genital mutilations practices)

The structure of the Law gives emphasis to prevention, support services to victims of FGM and information and training activities (it was changed after the Parliamentary debate in order to avoid risks that migrant communities from Africa could perceive it as a criminalization attack to their cultures). In art. 3, 2 millions Euro are allocated for Information and raising awareness campaigns both in Italy and in African countries, to be organized with migrants' gnus and Health Care Structures, training courses form infibulated pregnant women; training courses for teachers, monitoring of FMG cases within Health Care Centres and hospitals: 2 millions Euro are allocated;. Art. 4 is dedicated to the training of health care professionals and it allocates 2,5 million euro per year. With Art. 5 a Free Toll number is established (to be managed by the Ministry of Interiors) with the aim of collecting reports about (suspected) violations of art. 583 bis of the Penal code and providing information about support and health care structures; for this purpose a budget of 500.000 Euro per year is allocated. Art. 6 and 8 contains respectively the integrations to the Penal Code (art. 583 bis and ter) and the amendment of Legislative Decree 231, 8th June 2001, on sanctions to structure where FGM would take place. Art. 7 regards the integration of raising awareness initiatives on FGM in international cooperation programmes held by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
