Journalists in Europe : A Comparative Analysis of Gendering in the Social System Journalism

Based on a theoretical analysis that describes journalism as a social system in which gender is a central structural category, four Western European countries are compared as regards to the employment conditions of journalists. In addition to the personal dimension of gendering the author also takes the dimension of content into consideration. It turns out that the (identical) system rules with its horizontal and vertical discrimination of women are more effective than the (differing) general framework conditions in the states compared. System maintenance is thus accompanied by the perpetuation of outdated gender roles. Nevertheless, it can be stated for all four states: The Gendering is on the move. In a second part, the author interviews women in the profession and asks, what a feminist journalism would look like and how it would transform the media and its content.
