Genital mutilation in Austria - a survey among gynecologists, pediatricians and hospitals

250 questionnaires were used for collecting data on FGM among girls and women in hospitals.

130 public hospitals with departments of gynaecology and obstetrics and/or departments for children and adolescent medicine; 415 gynaecologists and paediatricians (response rate: 52%)
Prevalence data on FGM
16% answered that they treated girls or women who were affected by FGM. Results regarding the girls and women affected by FGM: For 86% FGM was attested in a general study; 14% came because of chronic pain; 81% came in the course of pregnancy/ childbirth; few came because of screening; 9.5% came for a deinfibulation. No hospital was visited for performing FGM. 81% of surveyed hospitals have not taken any steps against FGM at that time.
Disaggregated data per country of origin
75% of patients were from Somalia and Ethiopia.
Disaggregated data per age
The age of patients was between 15 and 44 years with a peak in the age between 10 and 34.
