Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the most pervasive human rights violations of our time. It is rooted in gender inequalities and reinforces them. Gender-based violence harms women, men, families, communities and society. Working towards the eradication of GBV has and will be a priority concern also for EIGE in the upcoming years.

Durign the event "A Europe free from Gender-based Violence" EIGE will present the results of major studies, will launch the Report on the cost of violence and will launch the White Ribbon Campaign.

Presentation of the study “Mapping administrative data sources on gender-based violence against women in the EU”

The two reports from the study on “Mapping administrative data sources on gender-based violence against women in the EU”, analyses and presents 144 administrative sources and 90 related statistical products, and shows that police and justice are the sectors more advanced in the provision of quality data on gender-based violence in the EU, and the feasibility of improving and adjusting data collection for criminal statistics on gender-based violence exists at EU-level.

Launch of the “Study on analysing methodologies to determine the economic costs of gender-based violence in the European Union”

The launch of the “Study on analysing methodologies to determine the economic costs of gender-based violence in the European Union”, prepared by Sylvia Walby and Philippa Olive (Lancaster University) in cooperation with EIGE clearly shows that the impact of gender-based violence on society is significant. Gender-based violence causes great economic loss.

EIGE will invite a number of participants for the round table discussions, representing the European Commission, MEPs, (FEMM committee members and members of the sub-committee on Human Rights), Members States representatives, prominent experts on gender-based violence and civil society organisations, in order to discuss the findings of the report; reflecting on the consequences of gender-based violence and agree on actions to be taken. The discussion will follow presentations of the Chair of the FEMM Committee, EIGE and Prof. Sylvia Walby.

White Ribbon Campaign

In connection to the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence EIGE also joined the global efforts of the White Ribbon Campaign. This campaign is a global campaign involving men standing against violence against women. This White Ribbon Campaign event will invite members of the European Parliament, the Member State representations in the EU and European Commissioners. Besides raising awareness about violence against women the event will provide the possibility to be directly engaged by serving as role models for change.

In addition, representatives of civil society organisations such as MenEngage and Promundo Europe as well as the Social Platform and European Women’s Lobby will join the event.

The White Ribbon Campaign event will contain a presentation from Ms Kat Banyard, UK Feminista on stereotyping of women and attitudes to women, discussions with the White Ribbon Ambassadors and signing of the (renewed) commitment by the campaign Ambassadors.

Discussion with the campaign ambassadors will focus on challenges for the engagement of men and how to address it. Signing a renewed commitment by White Ribbon ambassadors will be the highlight of the event after which facility for photography and recording statements will be organised.
