Serena Romano of Italy launched an international consultancy business in 2011, which includes counselling institutions and companies on gender issues. Major clients are the OECD-MENA Investment Program working on projects for women’s empowerment in the Middle East and North Africa and Sodexo and a French multi-national corporation for their Women’s International Forum for Talent (SWIFt).
She also co-founded Corrente Rosa in Italy in 2006, a women’s advocacy association and in her varied career, she has organised conferences that centred around gender issues and produced a documentary film called per la mia strada. She successfully lobbied for promulgation of law in Italy on balanced gender representation in company boards and in 2010 she cofounded Pari o Dispare, an Italian women’s association. Ms Romano also participates in several organisations that highlight gender issues such as La Pietra Coalition, a NYU-sponsored organisation that assesses thecurrent status of women, OECD-MENA and Women’s Business Forum.
Citing that gender equality is as the root of decision-making processes, she says that taking gender into consideration implies that women’s and men’s interests and requirements are analysed and included in all aspects of our lives. Serena commented: “Working in the legal and regulatory field for technology firms I quickly drew comparisons between my work and gender issues. I started leveraging the know-how and expertise developed in lobbying governments and institutions on technology to advocate women’s issues in every field. It has now become difficult to see advertisements, read newspapers or see films without reacting to the widespread lack of gender perspective.
“Interestingly, the brands that do not fall into the stereotype trap are the most advanced, innovative and forward looking. They are the winners as they reconcile the female and male aspects of humanity.
“We need the world to see through the lenses of gender equality, as few other subjects look as promising for the future. Gender equality will enrich everyone’s life as much as it has enriched mine.”
