The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) estimates that 9–15 % of girls (3 435–6 025 girls aged 0–18) are at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Spain out of a total population of 39 734 girls aged 0–18 in 2018 and originating from countries where FGM is practised. Of these 39 734 migrant girls, 79 % (31 232) are second generation.

With 72.0 out of 100 points, Spain ranks 8th in the EU on the Gender Equality Index. Spain’s score is 4.1 points above the EU’s score. Since 2010, its score has increased by 5.6 points. A tool to track resource allocation for gender equality in the EU cohesion policy funds (Tool 8) has been added to this step-by-step toolkit.

EIGE has developed an online toolkit to apply gender budgeting as a gender mainstreaming tool in EU Funds processes. The first three sections introduce the concept of gender budgeting and examine its relevance for the EU Funds. With 70.1 out of 100 points, Spain ranks ninth in the EU on the Gender Equality Index. Its score is 2.7 points higher than the EU’s score. Between 2005 and 2017, Spain’s score increased by 7.9 points, progressing towards gender equality at a faster pace than other EU Member States. Its ranking is the same as in 2005.
