Why are we developing the Gender Equality Index for Europe?

EIGE is in the final stage of developing the Gender Equality Index for Europe – a new tool to assess equality between women and men within the EU Member States and the effectiveness of EU policies in this area. The Gender Equality Index will support evidence-based policy making, aimed at making equality between women and men a reality for all Europeans.

The need to develop a Gender Equality Index for Europe as a common assessment tool was introduced by the European Commission in its policy document “The Roadmap for Equality between Women and Men 2006−2010”. It then became a part of the Action Plan of the Commission Strategy for Equality between Women and Men 2010−2015. The development of the Index became one of the major assignments attributed to EIGE in its Mid-Term Programme 2010−2012. The Gender Equality Index for Europe will be launched in mid-2013.
