The "Living conditions" theme contains sex-disaggregated indicators on a wide range of characteristics describing living conditions, e.g. poverty, childcare, housing, quality of life, social protection and more. Overall, these indicators help reveal existing gender gaps in several life domains and the linkages among them.
For example, gender gaps in employment, activity and wages can have long-term consequences for women's poverty and material deprivation and undermine women's economic independence. For women in employment, discrimination in terms of salary or working conditions can have negative effects on life and job satisfaction. Moreover, an uneven distribution of unpaid care work (e.g. childcare) between women and men can prevent women's full participation in the labour market and can be associated with higher shares of part-time workers among women.
