Step 1: Checklist for establishing an evaluation team

An evaluation team should include a diverse group of women and men with different perspectives. If you answer NO to any of the questions in the checklist, you should try and close those gaps in expertise. Consider making your evaluation team diverse in terms of gender, cultural background and geographical representation.

Is the evaluation team gender balanced and culturally and geographically diverse? If not…

  • how will you increase the diversity of the team? For example, you could contract specialists from outside your team or organisation.

Does someone in your team have experience conducting gender-responsive evaluations or incorporating gender analysis? If not…

  • you may need to seek support from gender experts within your organisation and work with the team to ensure that they are familiar with gender equality issues in the area of the intervention.

Does your organisation have a gender unit and/or gender equality focal points you can contact? If not…

  • you may need to find expertise outside your organisation to support you if you have further questions about gender mainstreaming.

External contractors are often hired through procurement procedures to conduct evaluations and support studies. If you are developing the technical specifications of an external evaluation, it is important to explicitly include gender expertise to ensure that the evaluation will address gender equality in the evaluation.
