Description

The Gender Equality Index offers a powerful tool to propel action for a more equal Europe. It is designed to help policymakers track progress and tackle ongoing challenges in gender equality. Since its launch in 2013, it has become a vital tool for the EU and its Member States, shaping policy discussions and guiding decisions. It is recognised as the key benchmark for gender equality by the Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025.

In 2025, the Gender Equality Index presents scores based on the updated conceptual and methodological framework. It tracks progress in gender equality in six key domains:  work, money, knowledge, time, power and health. In addition, it retains two critical domains that cut across all areas: violence and intersecting inequalities. Based on 27 carefully selected indicators, Index 2025 aligns with major EU gender equality policies and responds directly to policymaker needs. Besides Index 2025 scores, the recent data on gender stereotypes in the EU help to reveal just how deeply rooted gender norms still shape our daily lives, decisions, and opportunities. The findings highlight the persistent influence of stereotypes in both subtle and significant ways.
