Gender Equality Index

Serbia was the first country outside the European Union to launch a Gender Equality Index back in 2016. Serbia scored 52.4 points in 2016 and reached 60.0 in 2024. This indicates continuous, albeit slow progress in improving gender equality. If progress were to continue at this pace, it would take 40 years to achieve full gender equality at a high level of achievement within the domains covered by the index

The 2024 Index edition recorded the largest improvement in the domain of power since the Index was first published in 2016, increasing by 25.4 points, largely driven by the increased representation of women in political decision-making. The progress in other domains was slower, with the domain of money increasing by 2.3 points, the domain of work by 1.7 points, and the domain of health by 1.0 points. However, the score in the domain of knowledge has decreased by 0.1 points since 2016.

The 2024 edition has a thematic focus on the gendered dimensions of time use, drawing on key findings from the 2021/2022 Time Use Survey. The analysis highlights persistent inequalities in the distribution of paid and unpaid work. Women continue to spend significantly more time on household tasks and caregiving, while men have more time for leisure. These persistent disparities have far-reaching implications for economic opportunities, well-being, and overall quality of life.
