Women's work has changed profoundly with the pandemic. Working women have been and still are at the forefront, both for their wide presence in crucial sectors such as healthcare or services and for their multitasking role in the family, where they juggle smart working, remote education for children and care of the elderly, the disabled and the sick. Furthermore, women are mostly present in the sectors most affected by the economic crisis induced by the pandemic (tourism, commerce, entertainment). But the professions sector has also been heavily affected, we know this well.

  • How has our work with the Coronavirus also changed?

  • And do women in the legal profession suffer more than male colleagues?

  • How important is the work / family balance in determining the gender gap?

There is no doubt that the professional, income, and pension situation of the female colleagues already presented significant criticalities. The numbers say so, both the planetary ones of the World Economic Forum but also those, domestic and indisputable, provided by the Italian Cassa Forense.

Today, 8 March, we will dedicate International Women's Day to a sincere reflection on the disparities still present between female and male - lawyers, and we will question ourselves, with the help of experts, on the reasons, including cultural ones, of this gap and on the measures to be taken to remedy.
The Commission for Equal Opportunities-Florence Bar Association considers this reflection crucial, in the conviction that our community, which is inspired by the Constitutional Charta and the principle of equality, can no longer tolerate disparities "on the basis of gender" in society as a whole and even more so in the Bar.
