Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conferences (MARACs)
The meetings, which take place every 2-4 weeks and discuss 20-30 cases, share information about high-risk victims and to put together a multi-agency plan for each case. The success of the approach led to the concept being adopted nationally with government funding
Aims and objectives
To bring together local agencies (e.g. the police, advocates, social services, housing, health, probation, child protection, education) to protect women at highest risk from repeat domestic violence.
Results and impact
By 2009 there were 225 MARACs across England and Wales and in 2008-09 the approach provided protection to 29,000 high-risk women. The government has extended its commitment to developing MARACs in its 2009 violence against women and girls strategy, intending to roll them out to all geographical areas to reach at least 50,000 new victims by 2011.
