Counseling Centers for Violence against Women Συμβουλευτικά Κέντρα για τη Βία κατά των Γυναικών
The Women's Counseling Center of Athens along with the
Women's Counseling Center - Multicenter (also in Athens)
provide specialized information and counseling services in regards to:
a) psychosocial and legal support to women victims of violence,
b) employment and entrepreneurship in collaboration with the Research Centre for Gender Equality (KETHI),
c) legal aid in cooperation with the Athens Bar Association
d ) sexual and reproductive health in collaboration with the Maternity Hospital "Helena Venizelos" and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO).
The Women's Counseling Centers of Patras and of Heraklion provide:
a) psychosocial and legal support to women victims of violence,
b) employment and entrepreneurship in collaboration with the Research Centre for Gender Equality (KETHI),
c) legal aid in cooperation with the Patras and Heraklion Bar Associations
The Women's Counseling Center of Lamia provides:
a) psychosocial and legal support to women victims of violence,
b) legal aid in cooperation with the Lamia's Bar Association.
Aims and objectives
5 Women's Councelling Centers operating in Athens (2), Patra, Heraklion and Lamia providing services to women suffering domestic violence, as well as other types of violence.
Results and impact
No official evaluation had been conducted yet (until June 2011). But in a Press release that was publicized the following data were available: In a period of approximate 2 months (from the 2nd or the 9th of April until the 31st of May 2012, 183 women received some type of service from the 4 new Counseling Centres (85 in Athens, 44 in Heraklion, 39 in Patras and 15 in Lamia).
From the data regarding the relationship between the woman-victim and the perpetrator, it seems that the vast majority (62% - 88%) concerns domestic violence: more specifically, the perpetrator was the woman’s:
• spouse in more than the half cases (52% in Heraklion, 59% in Athens, 59% in Patras and 62,5 in Lamia)
• intimate partner (5% in Heraklion, 9% in Patras, 12% and 12,5% in Athens and Lamia respectively)
• another family member (e.g. child, father, brother) at a percentage 2% in Athens, 5% in Heraklion, 12,5 in Lamia and 13% in Patras.
The majority of the women asking services from the CC is 26-55 years old and unemployed.
