Truly understands women’s rights
Marietta Giannakouis European Parliamentarian representing Greece. Throughout her professional career, she has worked ceaselessly to support women’s rights, and these have reflected her various roles. Gender equality issues, and, the abolishment of any form of violence, are key areas of her work. Throughout her political career, she has focused on many fields, especially on the fields of the labour market, education, life – work balance, political participation, and gender based violence.
Examples are: her commitment to solve problems such early school drop-out of girls, and encouragements for girls to study Engineering and Science. Marietta Giannakoustrongly believes that share of women studying Science, Maths and Engineering should further increase. We all agree “that these subjects offer young people with some indispensable skills essential for the modern technology-and-information based economy. In this way, we may expect further improvement in the prospects of female participation in high-skill positions in the labour market”.
Gender equality has been one of my guiding principles
Reflecting at her political career, Marietta Giannakou emphasises the importance of gender mainstreaming education: “It is true that gender equality has been one of my guiding ideals in every single post I held, either as a minister of the Greek government or a member of the Greek or European Parliament. We have to work hard in schools and other educational institutions in order to lay the foundations for a society of respect between women and men.”
Today Europe is a beacon for the rest of the world with regard to gender equality. It is our responsibility to transfer our good practices to countries in Asia and Africa in order to substantially improve the welfare and integrity of women experiencing discrimination, unequal opportunities and poor welfare. In the meantime, we have to work even harder within Europe in order to tackle new challenges to gender equality and any hurdles in balancing family and professional commitments.
Navigating work and life balance on a personal level
In 2008 Marietta Giannakou suffered amputation of her right leg after a serious accident. The strong desire for life and offer gave her the strength to overcome her problem and after 10 months, left the hospital victorious and ready to fully respond in all political and social activities.
In 2009 she was re-elected member of the European Parliament and Head of the Parliamentary Delegation of Nea Demokratia Party in the European Parliament. She travels every week, regularly, in order to fulfil her parliamentary duties in Europe and beyond, with the same fighting spirit and mood.
