Gypsy between ignorance and anxiety
The book, talking about the socio-economic and cultural situation of gypsy population in Romania, is based on the empirical research of a large sample of families, representative at national level (1804 families, 12,000 persons). A summary of the book findings focuses on diagnosis of the socio-economic problems of the gypsy population and outline of the elements to be covered in a support, efficient programme. The gender issues are relevant for gypsy women education and employment. They are perceived as an ethnic population with a low social status characterized by extended family with a high birth rate, great proportion of children and teenagers, non-legalised marriages, marriages at early ages (under 16-17 years old), women becoming also mothers very early. These are the real bariers for the professional carreers of gypsy women.
