Looking for gender equality in journalism
The article deals with women’s role in journalism in Finland. There is a pronounced gender imbalance in the field. Women make up over half of the journalists in Finland, yet managerial positions are mostly occupied by men. The article recounts the situation and describes the reasons behind it: current obstacles in women’s career paths, structural reasons that prevent women from rising to the leadership positions, expectations of certain gender roles that bind women to their place, the pay gap, the perceived “male culture” in media houses that helps men get ahead and leaves especially women in higher positions feeling isolated are included in the list of reasons
