Women living in the NL coming from the 29 countries where FGM is practiced
Prevalence data on FGM
2005: 51,000 women; 2010: 60,000 women and 2011: 64,000 women
Disaggregated data per country of origin
Well over 80% originate from: Ethiopia/Eritrea, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Somalia, Egypt, DRC
Disaggregated data per age
In 2011, 44 % of these women from FGM practicing countries or having parents from these countries is below 20 years.
Limitations of study
The prevalence rates of the countries of origin have not been multiplied with number of migrants (extrapolation method), due to the many limitations of this method. The data were collected to prioritise FGM activities in the NL.
