Opinion of the Regional Commission on Bioethics formulated on the 9th March 2004 session regarding: "FGM: ethical conduct and juridical legitimacy of physicians' participation to an alternative ritual"
Regional Commission for Bioethics by the Tuscany Region considers as legitimate the proposal by Omar Abdulcadir from the Hospital Careggi (Florence) of allowing Public hospitals to practice a symbolic sunna (light injection on the clitoris under anaesthetics) only with those gynaecologists who voluntarily accept to make it and only in those cases where families express an intention to infibulate their daughters, without including it within the set of available, in order not to commit the crime of "peculation for distraction " (art. 314 penal code). A motion unanimously approved by the Regional Council of Toscana one month before had rejected the same proposal (http://www.consiglio.regione.toscana.it/agenzia-stampa/Comunicati-stampa...).
