Retention in Police Custody in France
The information was last updated in 2013 and may not accurately represent the present situation. It makes a reference to the United Kingdom as a member of the European Union and was published before the UK's withdrawal from the European Union on the 31 January 2020.
I n 2009, 580.108 measures of retention in custody
were recorded in the statistical activity of the
police and gendarmerie in terms of non-roadrelated
crimes. We can consider that these measures
helped contribute to the process of resolving crimes,
that is to say finding those to be questioned 7. As was
the case in 2009, 1.174.837 people were called
in for questioning for non- road-related crimes and
offences and the report “retention in custody/ questioning”
puts this figure at 49,4%.
The variations over time of this rate can lead to two
distinct phenomenon: one in relation to those questioned,
and the other in relation to the practice of retention in
custody itself.
