National census
Recensement de la population
National census by questionnaire. Since 2004, questionnaires are no longer collected on the whole territory but only in sample areas/municipalities
Data Collection
Year of data collection
2004-2012
Study population
Migrants residing in France (born as foreigners in a foreign country, including people who became French citizens since) and foreigners (people holding another citizenship, except multiple citizenships).
Prevalence data on FGM
None
Disaggregated data per country of origin
Publicly released data from the National census provides some (fragmentary) information about migrants and foreign populations living in France. For instance, data collected nationally in 2004 indicated that 570.000 migrants from Sub Saharan Africa lived in France. Besides, data collected in 2007 and updated in 2011, indicates that 213.767 girls under 18 were living in families of migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa, of which 34.538 were born abroad.
Limitations of study
Although they are collected within the frame of the National Census, indications of nationality of origin are not systematically published, for political reasons, and there is a relatively important discrepancy between available official figures and (much higher) evaluations made by representatives of each community.
