Validation
The data validation is done by conducting qualitative and quantitative checks based on: 1. Cross checks of the currents tables with the tables of previous years. 2. Comparisons of fundamental quantities of the survey with other relative statistical sources.
Compilation
Tables of the Offences Statistics are compiled on the basis of aggregate annual statistical Tables, which the Hellenic Police sends to EL.STAT. within the first quarter of each year. The Hellenic Police transmits tables to the Justice and Public Order Section of EL.STAT. On the basis of these Tables new Tables are created, which refer to the offences committed and to the persons considered as the perpetrators of the offences. The data immediately after their collection, undergoes logical checks, is tabulated and finally made publicly available.
Quality assurance process
Quality checks are made throughout the process, from the collection phase of the Tables by the Hellenic Police to the final formation and process by the Statistics Department of Justice and Public Order. The data is validated through logical checks to identify and ultimately correct possible mistakes. If large variations are detected in the number of offenses in relation to previous years, they seek clarification from the administrative sources, in order to confirm that it is either wrong or if it's real deviations. After the cross checks are made which lead to the necessary adjustments, the obtained results are of high quality.
Accuracy
Good. There are no sampling errors, because the survey is exhaustive and the data is collected using administrative sources. The non-sampling errors (non-response or processing) are identified and corrected with appropriate checks, in cooperation with the administrative sources. Thus production of data of high accuracy is achieved.
Reliability
Good. Reliability is achieved through the continuous achievement of accuracy as described above (Q18).
Timeliness
Good. The definite annual results are announced one year after the end of the reference year. Any delays are due to delays in response of the administrative sources.
Comparability
- Geographical
- Over time
- None
Geographically. The definitions and units of measurement used are not based on agreements between EU Member States and Eurostat but they are shared with those of administrative sources of the Country. Over time: Up to 2005, the age grouping for the persons committed offences was: 13-17 years, 18-20, 21-24 etc. Since 2005 the age grouping has been changed to: 14-18 years, 19-21, 22-24 etc. in the methodology followed by our Service, however this is not the case in the Ministry of Public Order & Citizen Protection, which provides us the data on offences committed. The Hellenic Police should adopt the new age groups above. From reference year 2010, the list of crimes committed by categories and geographical region they arose, enriched refers to General Police Directorate or GPD with Region Police Directorate or Police Department
Current developments
The data is updated when the related legislation is changing. After identifying user needs the tables are redrawn whenever necessary, taking care not to compromise comparability over time.
