Study on Area B of the Beijing Platform for Action: training and education of women
The study aimed to analyse the implementation of the strategic objectives formulated in Area B of the Beijing Platform for Action: education and training of women. The report presents an analysis of the following closely related areas at EU and national level: gender segregation in education and training; gender segregation in the labour market; paths of women and men from gender atypical fields of study to occupations; gender pay gap in occupations associated with women and men.
Review of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in the EU Member States
About half of EU students graduate in two main fields of education. In both of them, the lack of one gender is striking. Almost a quarter of students (24 %) graduate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and most of them are men.
Still today, gender is a defining factor in the EU labor market that divides the workforce. This leads to the untapped potential of talent, unmet aspirations and lost opportunities for women, men and society at large. In all EU Member States, men dominate specific fields such as engineering and technology but are not present in others, such as teaching and care work.
