Women in the military and the cult of masculinity
The issue of women in the military can be examined on three levels. Whether they should be in the military at all, whether they should be able to hold command positions, and thirdly, whether they should be allowed to have a combat role. Issues of gender are inextricably linked to questions of power and dominance. Challenging traditional military roles calls into question the cult of masculinity and threatend the military's use of the "code of manliness" to extract positive performance. Whether there can be a successful resolution in terms of equality and opportunity, given the pressures of gender attitude and the need for control, is problematical.
