Government Equalities Office
The Government Equalities Office (GEO) was established in 2007 and leads on issues relating to women, sexual orientation and transgender equality matters and has responsibility across government for equality strategy and legislation. It works to take action on the government’s commitment to remove barriers to equality and helps to build a fairer society, leading on issues relating to women, sexual orientation and transgender equality.

Description: Rachel became a civil servant in 1990, in the Department of Trade and Industry, and spent most of her career working on industry and enterprise policy. In 2004 she provided the secretariat for the Women’s Enterprise Panel who made recommendations to government to raise levels of entrepreneurship among women in the UK. From 2005 she had responsibility for policy on the creative industries, telecommunications and broadband, moving to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in December 2010 to continue working on that portfolio. Since 2013 she has been Director of the Government Equalities Office.
