The Office for Women’s Policy was founded in 1992 by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia as an independent inter-ministerial governmental body in order to sistematically monitor the situation of women and prevent their discrimination and marginalisation. In 2001 it was renamed to the Office for Equal Opportunities. It performed tasks related to the priciple of gender equality into national policies and to the elimination of gender inequalities in all areas of life, including the reconciliaton of work and family/private life. In the framework of the austerity measures, in March 2012 the Office for Equal Opportunites was abolished. The area of equal opportunities was shifted to the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs, Equal Opportunities and European Coordination Service.
