The information was last updated in 2013 and may not accurately represent the present situation. It makes a reference to the United Kingdom as a member of the European Union and was published before the UK's withdrawal from the European Union on the 31 January 2020.
Violence and abuse in lesbian partnerships is almost no subject of discussion in the mainstream discourse about domestic violence. Policies of European countries combating domestic violence focus on heterosexual couples and provide service and support for female victims and male perpetrators. Nevertheless, recent research indicates that about 40 percent of lesbian women did experience “domestic abuse” at some time in a same-sex partnership. Further, the risk being attacked by a male ex-partner is almost three times as high as being attacked by a female ex-partner.
