Characteristics
Reference period
Reference period 2000-2009 (in 2011 data available concern judgements of 2009)
Frequency of updating
Validation
Data arrive under the form of data for every single verdict. ISTAT clean, treat and validate them.
Compilation
The structure of Casellario giudiziale has been recently changed. Now data are of better quality starting from 2000. Also Istat has changed its own procedures: a new method of calculation has allowed a more precise identification of the type of crime (using information also on single paragraphs describing in specific the type of crime) and on the use of missing information.
Quality assurance process
Data arrive under the form of data for every single verdict. Data are not produced for statistical purpose, so there’s the need to clean, treat and validate them.
Accuracy
Good. The structure of Casellario giudiziale has been recently changed and from that moment data arrive much cleaner than before. Now data are of good quality starting from 2000. Also Istat has changed its own procedures: a new method of calculation has allowed a more precise identification of the type of crime (using information also on single paragraphs describing in specific the type of crime) and on the use of missing information. New data and new procedures also allow a wider information on single or recurrent sentences on crimes committed.
Reliability
Good. As far as reliability is concerned as data arrive directly from the Ministry of Justice they are considered reliable but with a low quality level. Data are comparable between geographical areas and over time, even if problems emerge on the meaning of data.
Timeliness
No information. Data arrive, as requested yearly.
Comparability
- Geographical
- Over time
- None
Current developments
The Italian Statistical Office is planning to produce an output using data on personal data of the condemned person. There’s also the idea to produce a statistical report covering a 10 years period to see the evolution occurred in condemnations referred to GBV
