European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) has this week launched a report on Violence against women in the EU as a part of the Gender Equality Index. The new measurement framework sheds light on the spectrum of violence against women that ranges from harassment to death. The findings analyses women’s experiences of violence in all the EU Member States including Lithuania. Women in Europe continue to be exposed to serious forms of violence and harassment. And what we know is only a fraction of reality. In the EU, almost 1 in 2 victims have not told anyone what happened.

On this occasion, EIGE organises a press briefing for the local media, where we present the findings of the report from the Lithuanian perspective.

How do the EU institutions respond to the phenomenon of violence against women? What are the measures introduced by the Government of Lithuania to combat the problem? Why are women afraid to speak out? What are the attitudes of Lithuanian society towards the victims of violence? These questions will be addressed in the discussion.

The speakers include:

  • Chair of the EU Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Vilija Blinkevičiūtė,
  • EIGE expert Jolanta Reingardė,
  • Vice minister of Social Security and Labour Vilma Šilalienė.

On the eve of this occasion Vilnius Town Hall and the EU House, where European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) is located, will light up in orange. This is how EIGE brings it‘s host city on the map of the global awareness initiative “Orange the World” and calls for action to stop violence against women. The buildings will be lit up from Friday, 24 November, 17:00 to Sunday, 26 November. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania will also light their building.
