Engaging with communities and actors on female genital mutilation: exchange of challenges and good practice

To support Member States in ending female genital mutilation (FGM), the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) is undertaking research to estimate the risk of female genital mutilation in Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg and Spain in order to develop recommendations to strengthen the efforts to eliminate FGM.

This online experience-sharing meeting was an opportunity for government and civil society representatives, academics and other national stakeholders to exchange experiences from these four Member States, to discuss challenges faced in their countries, and to share good practices and initiatives so as to support their efforts in preventing FGM and protecting girls at risk.

The discussion explored two of the key preliminary challenges explored in this research: engaging communities in the design and implementation of measures to prevent FGM and ensuring cooperation between different actors working on the issue. This exchange will support the development of actionable and tailor-made recommendations as part of EIGE’s research.
