The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) jointly with the UN Women Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia organise the “Beijing+25 Regional Review Meeting” which will be held in Geneva on 29 – 30 October 2019

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action of 1995 is the most ambitious road map for the empowerment of women and girls everywhere. In 2020, it will be 25 years since the Beijing Platform for Action set strategic objectives and actions for the achievement of gender equality in 12 critical areas of concern.

The Beijing+25 Regional Review Meeting provides a forum for UNECE member States to review progress and identify challenges in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action.

EIGE’s director Virginija Langbakk will participate in the panel Key trends on gender equality in the UNECE region. The discussion will highlight progress and key achievements in the 12 critical areas of concern of the Beijing Platform for Action and their intersection with the Sustainable Development Goals. It will also look at key opportunities and challenges, including digitalisation and its impact on the economy and gender equality, and discuss possible approaches and policies to address them

Jolanta Reingardė, EIGE’s Research and Statistics Officer, will participate in the panel Closing the gender gaps: Effective economic and social policies in the ECE region. The first part of the discussion panel will consider the dynamics of gender gaps in various areas, including the labour market, entrepreneurship and social protection, among others, and the policies that have been implemented to tackle these gaps. The second part will focus more specifically on the gender pay gap, the reasons that explain its persistence and the different policy approaches to close it.

EIGE will also organise two side events

  • Effective gender mainstreaming methods and tools: the way to speed up the pace towards gender equality. The side event will explore what we have learned about implementing gender mainstreaming across the EU. The speakers will talk about mainstreaming gender in their countries and the tools they have used. Special focus will be given to gender budgeting – given its potential to accelerate gender mainstreaming.
  • Beyond Beijing+25 in the EU: Sustainable and inclusive growth through the lens of women’s empowerment. The objective of this event is to present and discuss findings from the EU Beijing+25 review. The speakers will focus on the key challenges gender equality is facing across the EU and the ways to address them through policy action.
