Following the project’s successful kick-off conference in Brussels in April 2014, the European Gender Medicine consortium is now undertaking a series of workshops to assess the state of the art concerning sex and gender in European biomedical and health research and to develop a strategy for their further implementation.

The goal of the European Gender Medicine (EUGenMed) project is to outline a roadmap for implementing sex and gender in biomedical and health research into practice. Despite the fact that benefits of considering sex and gender are agreed among many medical experts, implementation of these into clinical research and daily medical practice practice is still lacking. This may be due partially to a lack of information, clear recommendations, guidelines and teaching materials as well as a lack of structures to implement sex and gender sensitive approaches.

Women make up over 50 % of the world population, yet in regulatory language they are referred to as a sub-population group. Even today, women still are not optimally included in clinical trials in representative numbers, and if included, robust sex and gender analysis is often lacking.

Gender sensitive clinical research and healthcare will require gender sensitive guidelines and training materials for investigators, regulators as well as health professionals involved in the delivery of care. If we fail to examine the impact of sex and gender differences, this may affect the quality of clinical research and health care.

Two consecutive workshops: ‘Sex and Gender in Medicines Regulation” and  Sex and Gender in Medical Education’ will take place on the 4 th of March 2015 at the European Economic and Social Committee building in Brussels .
